How to Reduce Waste During a Hotel Remodel: Five Essential Tips
Hotels produce an average of 1 kg of waste per day per guest, and in the middle of a remodel when you are pulling down window treatments, getting rid of of old bedding, removing bathroom fixtures and doing other things, this number gets even higher. Luckily, there are ways to reduce the waste your hotel produces during a remodel.
If you are planning to hire a bin for your hotel remodel, here are five tips for reducing the amount of rubbish you have to throw in that skip bin:
1. Recycle packaging and old building supplies
Hotels are notorious for throwing out items that could be recycled, and that includes everything from empty juice cans in the breakfast area to waste generated during a remodel. When hiring a contractor for your remodel, make sure you stipulate in the contract that recycling is a non-negotiable expectation of the job, and require that you see proof of recovery efforts before you pay the contractor.
Cardboard packaging around new items can be recycled but so too can a lot of the waste pulled from the hotel itself. That includes metal, lumbar, asphalt, concrete and roofing materials as well as other items.
2. Donate or sell old furniture and linens
Instead of filling your hired bin with old bedding, carpet remnants and other building materials, consider donating these items. You can give bedding, beds, window treatments, linens and old towels to charity shops who can resell them or to homeless shelters who can use them.
If you cannot donate those items for any reason -- for example, some charities do not accept old mattresses unless they have been fumigated for bed bugs and wrapped in plastic -- consider selling them.
If you run a mid-range or high-end hotel, you can often sell old furnishings or bedding to other lower-end hotels. Similarly, you could also consider selling your items at a very low cost to employees.
3. Give away old building materials
There are used building materials stores that may accept a range of donations from your hotel, including plumbing fixtures, cabinets, windows, light fixtures, HVAC equipment and almost anything else that could be reused.
If you are worried about the cost of hauling these items to charity groups, don't be. In most cases, the amount of time and effort it takes to haul these items to the donation site is offset by the savings you receive by having a lower bin hire bill thanks to generating less waste.
In many cases, you don't even have to haul the waste yourself. Rather, you can arrange for the recipient to pick it up for free in exchange for the donation.
4. Work with a salvage company
In lieu of donating your items, you can work with a private salvage company. These companies come into your building and they strip whatever you don't want that they could use or sell. In most cases, they don't charge you to gather materials from your 'industrial forest'. Rather, they recoup the financial cost of their efforts by selling old materials.
These professionals work with buildings in all states of transition from a simple remodel to a full demolition and rebuild.
5. Relocate old buildings
If you are doing a full demolition of your hotel and planning to start from scratch, you don't have to throw heaps and heaps of rubble in a skip bin. Surprisingly, in some cases, you may be able to salvage and donate the entire building.
Depending on the condition of your building, consider talking with local housing organisations and charity groups. Perhaps your entire building could be moved to a new location and turned into affordable housing units or transitional flats for homeless people.
