Mould loves humid environments, which means that your bathroom could be the perfect place for it to thrive. You can clean mould away with bleach, but unless you address the underlying cause it is likely to come back. Prevent mould from invading your bathroom by following these six simple tips.

1. Wipe Down Your Shower Every Day

Your daily shower not only gets you clean, but also sprays water all over the surrounding surfaces. If you leave water sitting on these surfaces, it could encourage mould to grow. One simple way to prevent mould is to keep a squeegee in your shower and use it to wipe away water droplets from the walls and shower screen after you shower.

2. Use a Daily Shower Spray

Wiping down your shower area is a good start, but an even better way to prevent mould growth is to use a shower spray. These products contain chemicals that kill mould and you can buy them in most household stores. Squirt your shower spray onto the tiled or glass surfaces surrounding your shower before you wipe them down to discourage mould growth.

3. Wipe Up Splashes and Spills

If you drip water all over the floor when you get out of the shower, or splash water over the side of the basin while shaving, you need to mop it up quickly. Leaving pools of water on the bathroom floor encourages mould to grow on the lino flooring or in the grout lines between floor tiles.

4. Get Rid of Your Shower Curtain

Mould loves to growth between the folds of a shower curtain, where moisture can easily accumulate. If you have an over-the-bath shower, swapping your shower curtain for a shower screen could help to cut down on mould growth. The hard, flat surfaces of glass shower screens don't provide as many damp corners for mould to thrive in.

5. Use Anti-Mould Paint

The steam rising from your shower can cause mould to grow on the bathroom ceiling. Once you have wiped away this mould with a dilute bleach solution, you can stop it coming back by painting your ceiling with a mould-resistant paint. This kind of paint contains antimicrobial ingredients that make it harder for mould spores to multiply.

6. Ventilate Your Bathroom

One of the best ways to prevent mould growth is to make your bathroom a less humid place. Install an extraction fan, which draws water out of the air, and maintain it regularly to ensure it is working well. Opening a window or propping the bathroom door open after you shower can also help to dry out your bathroom.
