Getting rid of mosquitos in your yard

If you love to entertain or spend time outdoors in your yard, mosquitos can put a dampener in your outdoors plans. Not only do the little flying bugs cause uncomfortable and itchy bites, but they can also spread a number of unpleasant diseases, including Ross River Virus and dengue fever. Here are some tips on how to get rid of mosquitos from around your home.

Get rid of standing water

Mosquitos breed in standing water and can breed in even small amount of water including water that can build up beneath pot plants in overflow dishes. You can also get water buildup in gutters that don't drain properly and water features that don't have water moving quickly enough. Even tarpaulin covers over barbeques can hold small pools of water that attract and breed mosquitos. Being vigilant about getting rid of still water is a good water to ensure that mosquitos don't have a chance to build up.

Plant naturally mosquito repellant plants

Mosquitos do not like certain types of plants, including garlic and lavender. While this will not get rid of a heavy invasion of mosquitos, it can help to keep stray ones from your yard. This can be particularly useful if the 'ground zero' of the mosquito infestation is a neighbour's yard where you do not have much control over the actual conditions. You can ask the staff at your local nursery to give you some advice on which types of plants grow pest in your area and can provide natural insect repelling properties.

Get a pest inspector to treat the property

If, in spite of best efforts, you still have an issue with mosquitoes, it is a good idea to get a pest controller around to treat the area. They can use some specific insecticides that target mosquitoes and can stop the entire breeding cycle by also removing the larvae and eggs. This can be a great way to help treat chronic mosquito infestation particularly if the mosquitoes are breeding in hard to access area such as in a local creek or hard to access tank or drain.

If you have a problem with mosquitos around your property there is a range options to get rid of them, including removing sources of water from the yard, creating naturally deterrents to mosquitos entering the yard and getting chronic infestations treated by a pest control professional.
